What is an Adventure Xstream Race? And who can do it?
Solo Athletes or Teams will travel an unmarked course by plotting the checkpoint locations using UTM coordinates and maps provided. You can view a UTM tutorial from our "Training" page. Each race has different disciplines which will include some or all of the following: Mountain Biking, Kayaking, Trail Run/Trek, Rappel, Tyrolean, Orienteering/Navigation, Skate/Scooter (See each venue for race specific disciplines). Teams race the entire course together....it is not a relay event.
Regardless of whether you are an elite athlete or simply an aspiring one, the AdventureXstream series has a variety of races/courses available to suit just about any athlete's abilities and endurance level. Each venue has different course lengths available so check the race venues for which course options are offered. Below are the general lengths and difficulties for each race/course... Sprint Race - (~25-35 miles) - Elite athletes will finish in about 3 hours with most teams finishing in 4-5 hours. 12 Hour Race - (~50-60 miles) - Elite athletes will finish in 6-7 hours, Weekend Warriors in 8-14 hours. 24 Hour Race - (~90-110 miles) - Elite athletes will finish in 15-18 hours, Weekend Warriors in 18-24+ hours. Xstream Expedition - (~250-300+ miles) - Multi-day Expedition Adventure Race. Designed for weekend warriors as well as elite athletes, only you can decide your level of ability and motivation. Decide what your goal is; teamwork, adventure, competition, or personal accomplishment. Ask yourself and/or your team if you can complete the specific distances in the estimated times above? While competing in these events takes training and hard work, don't underestimate yourself either. You do not have to be an "expert" in all of the disciplines to complete an adventure race. You should push yourself and/or your team to accomplish your goal but most importantly HAVE FUN!!. Teams, Categories & Cost
We encourage participants to race in the series regardless of their team makeup. There are only 3 categories to register under. If you wish to race in any combination other than these three you will need to register the additional team members in the Solo category. You can stay together but your times will be posted in the category you register in.
Prizes, Points & Rules
So, what do you get as a participant in the AdventureXstream Series? Your entry fee is mainly to cover the cost of producing the event; permit fees, medical support, participant insurance, boats, etc... But you will also receive:
2008 Rules
For the AXS Series Championships, teams can accumulate points at any of the events. Sprint, 12hr, 24hr and the Xstream Expedition all count towards point totals. There are 7 potential races to accumulate points, as the Summit Sprint race will be held on Sunday. Teams can accululate point in up to 5 races, dropping lower scores if you race in more than 5 races. So, strategize your route to the podium. Whether you are racing to accumulate points or racing to prevent another team from getting points, there will be many options on route to the championship. Additional Series Rules:

Pro/Adventure Class/Ranking
Our philosophy is that if you are out there giving it your all, then we certainly are not going to rank you as a DNF. Even If you only make it to CP1 you will still be ranked, we will put you in the "Adventure" class and ranked behind any team who gets further along in the course. There are certain checkpoints that have mandatory cut-off times. Competitors who make these cut-off times will be racing in the "PRO" category. If any of the cut-off times are missed or a team wishes to bypass these specified CP's, competitors will continue racing in the "Adventure" category and will complete an official, short course. Competitors will not be asked to specify a category prior to the race. Distances and difficulty of the "Adventure" course will not be disclosed. Teams are encouraged to complete the entire race, however the "Adventure" course will allow teams to complete the shorter course if determined necessary during the race. Teams completing a shortened course, or any portion of the course will be ranked behind all teams who complete the more of the course. Note: Each race varies slightly in difficulty. You can check the previous years results to get a feel for the number of people who finish in the "Pro" category. On average 90+% of the participants finish the "Pro" course. Team Preperation
Upon registration you will be emailed confirmation of your entry. It is your responsibility to familiarize yourself and your team with all of the information; Race Updates, Gear Lists, and required forms. Your logistical preparation is part of the challenge and is a very important part of a successful race!
Self Sufficient
Each competitor must be self sufficient. You and your team are responsible for your own food, water and equipment. You may refuel from your support personnel only at designated Check Points (CP) or Transition Areas (TA's). At race check in you will be given the course along with a map of designated check points.
Course Navigation - First Aid - Water
Teams will use maps, UTM coordinates, and as well as race instructions to navigate the course. First aid will be available at check point stations. No water will be available at check points except in an emergency.
Rope Skills
Either a Rappel or a Tyrolean Traverse may be part of the designated disciplines. Rappel - A fixed rope rappel of 50' to 300' may be part of the course. The necessary equipment and expertise will be required. Tyrolean Traverse - This is a suspended rope with a pulley system. Beginners can do this exercise. All that is required is a harness and a sense of adventure. The location of the Tyrolean Traverse will not be disclosed. (Note) in some instances racers may bypass the ropes section and take a time penalty or in some instances by bypassing the rappel you will then be racing in the "Adventure" class. See specific race pages for more information. Please check the specific race pages to find out if that event will have a Rappel or Tyrolean Traverse. Racer Safety
Your safety is our primary concern. EMT and Wilderness First Responder personnel will be on hand. An emergency reaction plan with local Emergency Medical Services is in place for all events. Safety personnel will be on the shore and in the water for all paddling portions of the event. We are working directly and indirectly with the following agencies; County Ambulance, Search and Rescue, Flight for Life, County Sheriff, Water Rescue, and County Dispatch. All participants are accounted for as they pass each checkpoint. Cut off times may be enforced to ensure racer and volunteer safety. Cut off times are variable and may be determined by race officials for any reason. Cut off times include designated time limits, snow, freezing rain, fog, race course conditions, remaining light or any number of circumstances that may arise the day of the event. With this in mind the course is designed to allow most competitors to finish. Adventure Racing is not without danger. In many instances you are not competing against other entrants but against mother nature. We go to great extremes to ensure a safe event. It is however your responsibility to know your limits and to put safety first! If you are not already educated in outdoor safety please do so before registering for any of these events. |
