About Buena Vista:
Here in
Salida and Buena Vista Colorado you'll find larger than life
mountains, a louder than life river, a respectful bow to the past and
an artful eye toward the future. Our scenery and people are 100%
natural. No artificial ingredients obscure the view of fifteen
14,000-foot peaks. Designated among Men's Journal 50 Best Places to
Live, Outside magazine's Best American Dream Towns and Fine Living
Network's 10 Perfect Places to Live in America. For more information
go to:

You will need to arrive in Buena Vista for "check-in" anytime between
6pm and
9pm on Friday May 7th at Buena Vista South Main Square, Next to Eddyline Brewery. All athletes are requested
to arrive together at check-in. See race start times below. Note: Sprint (6hr) and Sport (12hr) can opt for a Saturday Morning check-in. A gear drop is required early Saturday, more information will be posted in future updates.
Supported or
Unsupported:
This
years event will be either supported or unsupported. If you have a

White Water Kayaking - Declaration of Skill Proficiency: (For 12hr & 24hr races)
The
Buena Vista 12hr & 24hr course has some of the most fun and exciting class II &
III whitewater in the State! Kayakers will have a 2-3 mile stretch of
river that has several class II and III rapids which will require
intermediate paddling skills. This is not to scare you away, if you
have done our Vail race with class II+ rapids and feel confident in
your ability, then you will have a great time in the Buena Vista 12/24
Hour race. That said, if you are a beginner paddler and don't know how
to paddle a kayak straight or make quick adjustments you should
consider the Buena Vista 6hr race instead or the alternate paddle section. Solo
kayakers will be required to use inflatable kayaks, no hard shell
kayaks will be permitted. Inflatable Kayaks are provided to teams of
2 and 4. There will be plenty of river safety along the shore and in
kayaks should racers need assistance, but the 12/24 hour kayak section is
not for beginner paddlers. 12/24 hour race participants are
required to sign the "Declaration of Skill Proficiency" form to
paddle this section of river.
The
6hr Race Course has small class I/II- rapids and does not require a
paddle skills declaration form, and is more suited to novice paddlers.
Boat Requirements:
AdventureXstream will provide the Inflatable Tandem Kayaks for all 2 person and 4 person teams. In order to keep the
paddling sections fair and equitable all teams will be required to use
the boats provided. Alterations to the kayaks will not be permitted.
Note: We do not provide life vests or paddles.
12hr & 24hr Solo racers
(12hr & 24hr Course) are
required to provide their own inflatable Kayak, hard
shells are not permitted. We will have solo kayaks available for rent
directly from us at a cost of $30.00 These will be waiting for you at
the transition areas so that you do not have to transport them prior
to or after the race.
Solo Sprint Racers: can use an inflatable kayak or a hardshell kayak, you must be able to do an eskmo roll if you use a hardshell.

Navigation / Map Reading:
You will navigate your way over
a vast area of diverse terrain with the combination of map, compass, UTM
coordinates, and detailed instructions. Don't be too intimidated, you

*** You will get race route maps at racer check-in.
Checkpoints and Passports:
Each team and solo athlete will
receive 1 Official AdventureXstream Passport to be completed throughout
the race. No replacement passports will be issued. You will encounter
numerous checkpoints at strategic locations along the race route. We use
these checkpoints to monitor each racer's position along the race
course. Each checkpoint will have a unique punch for your passport. Passports must be completed in full and presented for
inspection at the finish line.
Self Sufficient:
This is a self sufficient
Adventure Race, meaning anything you need while racing, including food,
clothing, shoes, etc.... you have to carry during the race. You will be
able to swap out gear at the transition areas and refuel. There will
be first aid stations at various CP's and transition areas along the
course. There will be no water stations on the race route.
Safety & Emergency Rescue:
Adventure Racing is not without danger. Athletes need to be prepared
and take safety into their own hands. For event safety Gravity Play Sports is working
directly and indirectly with the following agencies:
- Chaffee County Ambulance -
Chaffee County Search and Rescue
