14-20 Mile Race - The Purgatory Challenge Kayak Race will take racers UP and Down the meandering Animas River. Racer will start near the 32nd street put-in and paddle 7-10 miles up the Animas River, then turn around and paddle back down, for a total of 14-20 miles of flatwater kayaking. The exact distance will be determined on race day, depending on current river levels.
Kayak Race Rules:
- Racers must bring a kayak of your choice (a racing boat or sea kayak would be optimal, inflatables are not suitable or allowed).
- All racers must paddle solo, no tandems.
- You must use a kayak paddle for propulsion. No motor, no oars, etc...
- No portaging is allowed (all property surrounding the river is private).
- This is a solo event, no towing is allowed for those teams trying to accumulate points in the series.
- Racers must have all mandatory gear.
Directions to Racer Check-in and Start/Finish:
From Durango Drive North on Main (Hwy 550), Right on 32nd Street. Cross the river and and take a left on E. 3rd Ave. Boat Ramp will be on your left. Racers will drop your kayaks and park along the street. Additional parking is available next to Memorial Park, South of 32nd street.

BYOK - Bring Your Own Kayak - Must be a hardshell kayak (Inflatables are not suitable for paddling up this section of river)
Kayak Padde - No other means of propulsion is allowed
