The Purgatory Challenge Mountain Marathon will be an epic remote trail marathon. Starting at the Purgatory Ski and traversing over to the Hermosa Creek Single track trail. This is NOT for the inexperienced runner. The Hermosa Creek trail itself is 20 miles of backcountry single track running. Aid stations are located at key locations where you can refuel before continuing on.
After 3 days of racing this mountain marathon will be the ultimate crux to see who can complete the stage race and ascend from Purgatory!
Shuttle From Finish:
For those racers that do not have friends or family to pick them up at the finish. We will have transportation back to the Ski Area. Transportaion will leave approximately every hour once racers start finishing.
Aid Stations:
There will be 5 Aid Stations. They will be stocked with Water, Heed, PBJ, Apples, Bananas, Oranges, Cookies, and a limited supply of Electrolites and Hammer Gels.

- Start at Purgatory Ski Area (Durango Mtn Resort)
- Ascend the 1990 Worlds Course to Elbert Creek Rd
- Take a Right on Elbert Creek Rd
- Take a Left on Hermosa Park Rd
- Take a Left at the Upper Hermosa Creek Trail Head
- Descend the Hermosa Creek Trail to the Finish at Lower Hermosa Creek Trail Head.
Note: The Upper Hermosa Aid Station #2 Cut-Off time is 11:30am. You will not be permitted to continue if you miss this cut-off time.
Mtn Marathon Race Rules:
- You must have your required gear (Water Purification, Space Blanket, Pack for Food & Water)
- This is a solo event, no towing is allowed for those teams trying to accumulate points in the series.
- The course will be marked with event arrows and existing Forest Service Signs. YOU are responsible for knowing the course and following the correct trails. An outline of the course and trails will be given to you at check-in.
- We strongly recommend bringing the "Recommended" gear and clothing. Weather is unpredictable and you should be prepaired. This is a backcountry race!
